Date of Visit: May 2018
Montreal was a vibe.
One of my old school friends works over at Ubisoft — he’s the one who came up with their “MouseTrap” anti-cheat system. Basically: my people are clever! He’d been asking to come over, so I said “yeah! I’m down” and booked the trip to what I used to call “America Lite”.
Montreal was dope. very multicultural (which I always love), and the city centre felt like Manchester’s Northern Quarter if someone hit CMD + Plus on it a few times. Street art absolutely everywhere — not the half-hearted stuff either, I’m talking ridiculously good murals on every corner. They’ve properly leaned into the creative side of the city and it shows.
One of the highlights was seeing the Church of St. Michael and St. Anthony, which shows up in the Assassin’s Creed games. Makes sense — the dev team is right there. It’s one of those moments where the real world and the game world overlap!
My boy took a few days off to play tour guide, so I basically got the deluxe package:
- St Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal — apparently where Celine Dion got married, and honestly a very cool place, massive presence.
- Mount Royal Park — the views were great!
- A whole bunch of wandering, exploring, eating, and just absorbing the city.
All in all: Great trip, made even better because I got to link up with my old school mate. Montreal can definitely hold its own.
An excellent trip.
